The UPSC Civil Services Main Examination (CSE Mains) is the second stage of the Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Candidates who qualify in the Preliminary Examination are eligible to appear for the Mains.
The Mains is a descriptive written examination designed to assess an aspirant’s depth of knowledge, analytical ability, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and ability to present ideas clearly and logically.
Nature of the Mains Examination
Unlike Prelims, which primarily tests knowledge through objective questions, Mains requires candidates to write analytical and well-structured answers. A good answer should demonstrate conceptual clarity, multiple dimensions, relevant examples, current affairs, balanced arguments, and effective presentation.
Analysis of 2026 Mains Question Papers
The Mains Examination consists of nine papers. Two are qualifying papers, while seven contribute to merit.
Paper A – Indian Language: 300 marks – Qualifying
Paper B – English: 300 marks – Qualifying
The marks obtained in these two papers are not counted towards final merit, but candidates must qualify them.

Each Mains paper is generally conducted for three hours.
Three Stages of UPSC CSE
Preliminary Examination → Main Examination → Personality Test
Prelims is primarily a screening stage, and its marks are not counted for final ranking. The Mains and Personality Test determine the final merit and rank.
