Wind Turbines Along Railway Tracks
Indian Railways aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 . The Ministry of Railways is exploring wind energy by installing wind turbines along railway tracks . Inspired by global rail systems using innovative renewable energy solutions.

Windmills generate power when trains pass at speeds between 50 and 100 kmph, using rotor shafts and copper plates. The concept has been used globally, but experts claim scaling it in India faces may challenges .
- Western Railway conducted a pilot project in 2023 by installing mini wind turbines along tracks.
- The vertical-axis turbines generate 1-10 kilowatts of electricity using wind from passing trains.
- A similar feasibility check was conducted for the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway project
Challenges & Concerns
- Inconsistent Wind Speeds : Railway tracks may not have sufficient wind speeds for optimal turbine operation.
- Safety Risks : Possible hazards during maintenance or if parts break and fall near tracks.
-
Logistical Issues
:
- Installing and maintaining turbines along railway tracks is complex and costly .
- Requires significant spacing to avoid turbulence , which urban and congested railway corridors lack .
- Cost vs. Benefit : The energy generated may not justify the high investment and operational difficulties .
Alternative Strategies for Renewable Energy
- Solar Energy :
- Railway land can be efficiently used for solar farms .
- Indian Railways has already commissioned 487 MW of solar plants (rooftop & ground-mounted).
- Offshore Wind Farms :
- Railways can partner with energy companies to invest in large-scale offshore wind farms, where wind conditions are more suitable.
- Renewable Energy Progress (as of Dec 2024) :
- 103 MW of wind power commissioned.
- 100 MW Renewable Energy Round-The-Clock (RTC) started .
- 2,014 MW of renewable energy capacity tied up for future projects.
- While wind turbines along railway tracks may not be viable, solar energy and offshore wind partnerships are more practical solutions .
- Indian Railways is already investing in solar and wind energy to meet its 2030 carbon neutrality goal.
- The focus should be on cost-effective, scalable, and efficient renewable energy solutions .
